Fall 2007

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We want to extend a warm welcome to all of the new families who have just joined the Lakeshore community! Whether you are the parent or caregiver of an incoming kindergartener or of a returning student, these first few weeks of school offer a time for both excitement and reflection. Why did you choose Lakeshore for your child?

Many of us were drawn to the school because of its reputation for academic excellence and its unique language-arts based curriculum. Thanks to our outstanding group of teachers, Lakeshore is a place where children develop strong literacy and writing skills at a very early age. It is also a place where the arts come alive in the classroom. We have an exciting pool of consultants that teach the students visual art, drama, motor perception, dance, science, music, poetry, and architecture, many funded by the PTA.

The ethnic diversity of our student population is also one of the school’s greatest assets. Our children speak many languages and celebrate a rich variety of cultural traditions. These differences allow them to learn from each other in meaningful ways as they begin to understand how their classroom mirrors the larger community and world.

It is important for all of us to remember the reasons why we chose Lakeshore as we begin a new and challenging year together. As you know, state budget cuts have decreased funds to this and other schools across California. While we have worked hard to minimize the effect of budget cuts on Lakeshore programs, we are faced with a demanding agenda of fundraising to keep our programs going strong. In short, we need you--both your time and as much financial support as you can offer--to help preserve the many special attributes of the school and to ensure that Lakeshore continues to be the first choice elementary school of so many families in San Francisco.

The goal of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is to work with all of the members of our community to help create the best environment for our children. The first step you can take in contributing to the success of your child is to join the PTA today. We rely heavily upon the funds raised from membership to provide academic, emotional, physical, and social enrichment to every student.

Secondly, we strongly encourage you to volunteer at school. As you explore the website, jot down names and phone numbers of those organizing school-wide events and activities that interest you. Don’t be shy to give a call or send an e-mail and find out what you can do. For those afraid of large commitments, we have small time-limited types of tasks that require a person’s help. Talk to your child’s teacher about volunteering in the classroom, the library, at motor perception, or on the schoolyard. While many of us are working full-time and cannot be present during school hours, there are so many ways your donated time can be of value to the school, whether it’s offering to make photocopies, or helping out at Family Math Night, to name but a few!

Maybe you chose Lakeshore because you noticed so many families participating in their children’s educational experience. Well, we are all depending upon each other’s contributions to our school to create the best possible school environment for everyone. Let’s all have a great year!
