| provide one-on-one
reading assistance for Lakeshore students in need, it also strives to
support the literacy needs of the entire Lakeshore community.
It is overseen by the Director, Helen Gillotte, a professor at San Francisco
State University, and managed on a day-to-day basis by the Coordinator,
Jennifer McNaughton.
RAP hires students from San Francisco State University to provide reading
assistance for Lakeshore students chosen by their teachers to receive
additional support in reading. RAP interns complete extensive training
in literacy theory and methods through a 3-unit seminar at San Francisco
State. The seminar is taught by the RAP Coordinator, who works closely
with interns throughout the year, discussing their students' progress
on a weekly basis, observing them as they tutor, and meeting with them
and their classroom teacher at Lakeshore.
Thanks to the foundation's gift to the San Francisco Unified School
District, RAP can provide a substitute teacher so Lakeshore teachers
can attend these important meetings.
In addition to tutoring, RAP interns also provide much-needed supervision
on the playground at lunch time.
RAP also offers literacy education workshops for parents and classroom
volunteers, covering such topics as teaching phonics, making learning
fun, and reading with children.
In addition, RAP organizes the very popular annual Family Literacy Night
at which parents and children can try out a variety of fun educational
games, listen to poetry and story-telling, and discover outstanding
educational web sites.
